Is Organic Food Better for You
By: Matt Kent
The US has witnessed a long standing debate on the nutritional benefits of organic food. With trillions of dollars hanging in the balance and laws protecting businesses from almost anything that lowers their bottom line, few credible American sources have taken a stand on this issue. As a result, we turn to our European neighbors for the facts. A new report by the French Agency for Food Safety (AFSSA) has found that organic foods are in fact better for you. Some of the findings reveal:
- Organic plant products contain more dry matter (more nutrient dense).
- Organically produced products have higher levels of minerals.
- They contain more anti-oxidants such as phenols and salicylic acid, known to protect against cancers, heart disease and many other health problems.
- Organic animal products contain more polyunsaturated fatty acids (protect against heart disease).
- 94-100% of organic foods do not contain any pesticide residues.
- Organic vegetables contain far less nitrates, about 50% less. High nitrate levels are linked to a range of health problems including diabetes and Alzheimer’s.
Another source presents the early findings of a 4 year, $20 million study conducted by the European Union on the benefits of organic food. It suggests that some organic foods, such as fruits, vegetables and milk are more nutritious than their non-organic counterparts. In addition, they may contain higher concentrations of antioxidants which are extremely beneficial to the heart and have been known to fight cancer.
Why buy organic food? It’s simple: organic food is just good food. It’s good for your body, good for the environment, good for the animals and just downright good for the soul. To those who cite lack of research, I say, “why take chances with your body and mind when organic food is readily available?” So make the extra effort, even if it’s small to start. feed yourself and your family more organic meals. The rewards will last a lifetime.
